This is the internship required by the study plan for students enrolled in any Master's Degree programme and is acknowledged with ECTS.
This type of internship does not appear in the study plan and does not involve the recognition of CFUs.
However, the activity must present content inherent to the study path. It can be activated by:
● students who carry out an internship to develop their Master's Degree Thesis;
● students who simply wish to have an internship experience
Students must activate the mandatory internship to obtain the credits necessary to achieve the Master's Degree title.
However, if they were to activate in addition one (or more) non-mandatory ones, these must in any case be concluded before the thesis discussion.
The extracurricular internship, intended as an additional experience useful for entering the world of work, can be carried out by newly graduated students no longer enrolled in a course of studies, can start up to 12 months from the accomplishment of the title and can have a maximum duration of 6 months for each experience. The extracurricular internship does not confer university credits and is managed by the Career Service.
For more information consult the appropriate section on the Career Service website: how to activate a graduate internship with Polimi Career Service | Career Service - Politecnico di Milano
In case of qualified work experience of the student, it is possible to request its recognition in place of the mandatory internship subject to approval by the SAT Manager.
However, this work experience must be duly proven by a regular employment or collaboration contract, coherent with the study path, ongoing or about to be started at the moment in which the carrying out of the mandatory internship becomes necessary, and of a minimum duration adequate to what is foreseen by the didactic regulation of the specific study course
The internship can be identified in the following ways:
- the student applies to the offers present on the University Career Service bulletin board through the selection of the appropriate flags. In the period following the application, the student may be contacted directly by the entity for an interview in case their profile should result adequate to the request;
- the student identifies a hosting entity through personal or teaching contacts, or through autonomous research;
- the student contacts a teacher of the school available to welcome them in a Laboratory for the carrying out of an Internal Practical Activity;
ATTENTION: If you wish to carry out an internship abroad, it is recommended to make your curriculum and portfolio available online in English, creating a mini site or using "file-sharing" services. Students are urged to activate themselves with an advance of at least 3 / 4 months compared to the period planned for the internship for timings related to the search for an internship abroad or necessary documentation. The student must personally verify if a visa is required and possibly the methods to obtain the most appropriate visa. In case ad hoc documentation from the Politecnico is necessary, it can be requested through the Career Service, giving a notice of about 10-15 days. In case of an internship abroad in Europe, it is possible to participate in the annual Erasmus+ for Traineeship competition call, managed by the Career Service, generally online in the month of April.
To start an internship, of one of the types specified below:
● Mandatory internship in Italy or Abroad
● Internal practical activity substituting the mandatory internship
● Activity assimilable to the mandatory internship.
It is necessary to insert the activation request directly in the Career Service portal; for preliminary information on the procedures, send an email through the assistance service.
At the conclusion of the internship period, first the student and then the company tutor, will have to fill out online, accessing the Career Service platform, an evaluation questionnaire of the experience; links will not be sent via email, it will be the care of the student and subsequently of the company tutor to verify that the survey is available.
The validation of the internship is correctly brought to completion when the student in their Study plan displays, next to the item "Internship", the wording "C" (Validation), followed by "00" in the box relating to the evaluation and by an L in the "Validation" section, as the internship has no grade and consequently does not average.
For variations relating to an already activated internship (interruption, early closure, extension, modifications in general) insert the request directly to the portal, entering into your internship.
The attendance register is available on the Career Service portal, in the Internship Details section. The compilation of the attendance register is the responsibility of the intern, while the Internship Manager is responsible for its confirmation at the beginning of the month following the reference one. Once the hosting subject confirms the month, this is closed and it is no longer possible to make modifications. The compilation of the attendance register has the following purposes:
● Keep track of the days of attendance in a shared way between intern and hosting subject, in particular in case of a paid internship, for the purposes of the total or partial disbursement of the foreseen monthly indemnity
● Register any absences or business trips, without the need for further communications to the reference SAT
For mandatory internships with standard procedure (Italy and Abroad) the following academic tutors have been selected:
- Integrated Product Design: Prof. Venanzio Arquilla e Prof. Carlo Emilio Standoli
- Interior and Spatial Design: Prof Andrea Ratti
- Design della Comunicazione: Prof.ssa Daniela Anna Calabi
- Design for the Fashion System: Prof.ssa Susanna Testa
- Product Service System Design: Prof.ssa Daniela Selloni, Prof.ssa Stefana Maja Broadbent, Prof.ssa Claudia Mastrantoni
- Design & Engineering: Prof.ssa Francesca Mattioli
- Digital and Interaction Design: Prof. Daniela Petrelli, Prof. Chiara Di Lodovico, Prof. Nicola Besana
For non-mandatory internships that require an academic tutor, the tutor teacher must be identified by the student; the name will be inserted in the platform during the presentation of the internship activation request, upon agreement with the indicated teacher. In non-mandatory internships, where the student's intention is to develop the thesis on the internship topic, it is necessary that the student independently identifies their Academic Tutor (who will coincide with the Thesis Supervisor). For mandatory internships abroad with a non-standard procedure, the Internship Tutor must be a tenured professor identified by the student; it is necessary that:
● the academic tutor gives a favorable written opinion
● the intern obligatorily receives from the University a training on Confidentiality and Industrial Property preliminary and functional to the internship. The training must obligatorily provide a moment of verification of the acquisition of the concepts prior to the start of the internship; in case of failure to pass the test, the start of the internship must be postponed
● that the intern signs a declaration of indemnity, in favor of the Politecnico di Milano, in all cases of damages directly and/or indirectly connected to the violation of the aforementioned confidentiality obligations.

F.A.Q.
The mandatory internship is foreseen in the second year of the Master's Degree and can be activated only after being inserted in the study plan.
For degree courses that foresee the internship in the first semester, activation is generally possible starting from mid-October. For degree courses that foresee it in the second semester, instead, activation can occur approximately from mid-February.
If the internship is foreseen in the first semester, it is however possible to carry it out also during the second semester.
In Italy as well as abroad at studios, agencies, companies, associations, laboratories and research units internal to the University (only mandatory internships), also during the carrying out of international exchange programs (Erasmus, extra-EU exchanges…).
It is only necessary to insert the activation request within the Career Service portal.
By asking via email to careerservice.stage@polimi.it, indicating the name of the company and the VAT number.
Yes, the Politecnico di Milano covers you at the level of accidents and civil liability, in the days, places and times declared within the project itself; for this very reason it is necessary that the internship is activated before the start of the internship itself.
The company will be informed by the Career Service at the time of the Agreement request of the need to pay € 32.00 as reimbursement for stamp duties for the activation of the agreement (unless it is a foreign entity, public entity or ONLUS/non-profit organization).
Yes, for serious and documentable reasons and prior communication to the Internship Office using the assistance service.
In the case of a mandatory internship, if the minimum amount of hours has not been reached, the hours carried out are not however recoverable and it is necessary to carry out a new internship of at least 250 hours.
Internships cannot be carried out completely in 'remote' mode, but only in blended approach (mixed presence-remote).
The activities will be carried out according to the methods and calendar established and signed within the Training Project.
Contact and inform the Internship Office using the assistance service on any variation to the training project.
No. In the absence of an Agreement and Training Project there is no internship on a legal level, nor insurance coverage.
The 3rd year workshop can be replaced by extra-curricular training activities such as internships activated with the support of the Internship Office.
The replacement request must be presented before the start of the activity and in any case before the start of the semester in which the teaching for which validation is requested is placed. The documentation to be presented must be requested using the assistance service.
